Rachel DeShon is the co-founder and director of the Moore Artist Collective, a non-profit Imaginative Arts Development Production Company, that is powered by Shunpike. The Moore Artist Collective is committed to the creation of new works that directly address challenges experienced by young people and their families.
The Moore Artist Collective is currently developing the one-woman operatic stage play, I AM AN OPERA, for family audiences. I AM AN OPERA highlights the voice and talents of soprano, Rachel DeShon in collaboration with Playwright/Director Robert Morgan and Composer/Music Producer Avi Lasser. I AM AN OPERA charts the course of one young girls graceful, bumbling and at times harrowing journey to becoming fully human. They are exploring the vast pallet of sounds we make as humans and how these various sounds, the physical, vocal and mechanical, impact the tradition of Classical music. I AM AN OPERA becomes an extraordinary tribute to one young girl’s quite ordinary capacity to triumph.
In 2018, the I AM AN OPERA creative team were artists in residents at the Banff Centre of Arts and Creativity as a part of the ‘Concert in the 21st Century’ program and they also received two grants for the development process through the Canada Council of the Arts.
Rachel and Robert are also the co-founders and directors of the Moore Artist Collective and are recognized as innovative leaders in their respective fields. With a voice that has been called “undeniably fantastic”, Rachel DeShon, winner of Marvin Hamlisch’s Search for a Star is at home with symphonies, opera houses, theatre productions and even circus tents. Rachel has proven herself to be an extremely versatile performer and strives to use the classical voice in unexpected, non-traditional ways. Robert Morgan’s multi award winning plays have helped establish new international standards for the creation of theatrical works for young audiences. His play, Morganʼs Journey, is the longest touring play in Canadian history, has been called “a true Canadian classic”. His work has helped establish Canada as one of the world’s foremost producers of theatre for young audiences.
